This month we’ve been learning all about food and healthy eating. One of the activities that we did was a sorting activity where the children had different categories of food (fruit, vegetables, meat, fish, dairy, etc) and had to think of as many different examples that belonged to each category. It was a great exercise for the children to think about what different food they know, where it belongs and we even got to debate whether certain food was in the right category like “Is a tomato a fruit or a vegetable?”.

Spelling is a constant practice for the green class and one of the ways we’ve made it more interesting is to do a large word guessing game where the children have many words and can guess letters. As the words slowly get revealed, it gives the children an opportunity to think about spelling but also think about what words might be appropriate as they get hints about what the words are. They really get into it. After the words get revealed, we get to have a small discussion about what the words mean, and maybe the context of where they might see or use the word.

Learning through play is a great way for the children to learn and to keep them motivated. One of the games we taught them was a game called Bananagrams, where the goal of the game is to try and spell as many words as possible using the limited number of letters you have and the words all have to connect to each other in some way. It’s a great way for the children to freely explore words and spelling, self check their own spelling, and even rework their list of words to better suit the letters they have available to them.
